1832 - Black Hawk's War begins

Black Hawk

Black Hawk, a Sauk chief living in Illinois, returned from a trip to Iowa and found his village overrun with whites.  When the settlers refused to move of Sauk land, the state militia stepped in to protect their fictitious claims and proceeded to drive the Sauk out of the state.  Ultimately defeated by overwhelming forces, Black Hawk was forced to surrender with a pledge to never again visit the Sauk homelands in Illinois.
