        The competition over this valuable fur would control coastal commerce between England and Spain for the next fifty years.  American fur traders arrived in the Pacific Northwest in September.  By now, the young mapmaker, David Thompson, was already mapping the routes to the Rocky Mountains across the central plains of Canada.
