1497 - Henry VII and the Pope

     Letters of patent, an Iberian-inspired legal device for reinforcing loyalty to the pope, allowed Henry VII to reserve a fifth part of all profits derived from foreign conquests.  Henry's fealty to the pope suggests that the medieval discourses on conquest still dominated English legal thought just a short generation prior to the violent political convulsions of the Reformation. click here for more
